CD GAME COPY PROTECTIONS

SecuRom *New*

Note: Most this information relates to SecuRom *New* v4.8x.

SecuRom *New* uses a completely new method in its protection than the previous SecuRom protection. SecuRom *New* works with a spiral data track existing on the original disc, having a varying structure which causes the drive to take more or less time to read a sector. These delays between the delivery of two sectors are checked, and if the delays do not fit the right pattern, the burnt CD is recognized as being invalid or "copied". Unfortunately for people who are legitimate owners and want to backup their legally purchased game it is impossible to copy this structure because the spiral data track has already been pressed on to the game CD when you purchase it. Inside this track there is a substance that changes when it is hit by the writing laser, so the bits and bytes can be burnt into the track. But it is impossible to manipulate one sector so it takes longer to read it so a burnt CD will always be recognized as invalid. It is possible to make working copies of the game, which is explained next. If you want to learn more about the official release of SecuRom *New* click here.

Detection Of The Protection

You can use the many protection detection tools from our Game Copy Protection Identifying Tools page to identify whether the protection is being used on your game.

Burning/Backup Solution

At the moment you can't get a 1:1 copy of the game burnt to a CDR, the best way to go in terms of 1:1 copy of the game is by mounting the games image and emulating the games copy protection. This can be done with BlindWrite burning software and Alcohol 120% burning software, using Daemon Tools to emulate the protection. The unfortunate side to this backing-up method is that your copy can become invalid with the next update patch for the game as the patch will also update the copy protection to the next level. *Remember, if you experience problems with burning the game at high speeds, (2 speed +) (both the read and write process), then burn the game at lower speeds such as 2 speed and under (both read and write process). A lot of the time burning the game at slow speeds will solve problems of the install not working, or the burner not bypassing the CD's protection.
