SafeDisc 2 SafeDisk 2 is one of the latest CD Protections
to come from the Macrovision Corporation and works a lot more
effectively than SafeDisc did. The SafeDisc 2 protection was first
encountered on Red Alert 2. With little effect with SafeDisc 1 on
commercial pirating and increased features with new CD Writers the Macrovision Corporation had to make a better CD
Protection so they came up with SafeDisc 2. The SafeDisc 2 protection uses
"weak sectors" containing a regular bit pattern, so all this data
can be read fine by a CD writer, but when it comes to writing the protected
CD image it presents the burner with all these "weak sectors"
which many burners don't like to burn. A writer has to produce the same bit
patterns as they appear on the original CD. A lot of the older burners don't
have any functions that can support the burning of "weak sectors"
so it is important to have a fairly newer burner if you are going to attempt
to burn a game with this protection on it. For more information visit the SafeDisc
2 website.
Detection Of The Protection
The following files should exist on the
original CD:
00000001.TMP
00000002.TMP
The
loader file (<GAME>.EXE) is now integrated into the main executable,
making the <GAME>.ICD file obsolete. Also the CLOKSPL.EXE file, which was
present in SafeDisc v1, does not exist anymore. This can make it a little more
difficult to detect.
You can use one of the many protection
detection tools from our Game Copy Protection Identifying Tools page to identify
whether the protection is being used on your
game.
Burning/Backup Solution
There are several different methods you
can use to successfully burn/backup your game, as follows:
You
can use CloneCD to successfully burn the
game. Use ClonyXXL to scan the game,
it will then tell you what protection is being used on the game (SafeDisc 2)
and the correct settings to use in CloneCD
to successfully backup the game. You can also use Alcoholer
protection scanner and Alcohol 120%
burning software. Use Alcoholer to
scan the game, it will then tell you what protection is being used on the
game (SafeDisc 2) and the correct settings to use in Alcohol
120% to successfully backup the game. BlindWrite
can also successfully burn a game with this protection on it. You can also use
Daemon
Tools to emulate the game and the protection. *Remember,
if you experience problems with burning the game at high speeds, (2 speed +)
(both the read and write process), then burn the game at lower speeds such
as 2 speed and under (both read and write process). A lot of the time
burning the game at slow speeds will solve problems of the install not
working, or the burner not bypassing the CD's protection.
You can also use UnSafeDisc
2 and/or SafeDisc
2 Cleaner which are tools used to unwrap a SafeDisc 2 protected
file by permanently removing the protection from the games exe and dll files. Just simply
run the program select the games exe file and it will permanently remove the
SafeDisc 2 protections in it.
